Discover the world of music and art with Pedestrian, Leicester’s premier arts and education charity. This is not your typical day out. Before the Spotlight: Experience Grime is a high-energy, full-blown festival of creativity happening on the 1st of July, at Highcross Shopping Centre from 11am to 4pm.
From an engaging DJ Masterclass to a postcard design competition, we’ve got something to keep everyone entertained. Young and talented musicians from our city will put on a show, featuring a lively combined marching band from the Leicestershire Music Service (LMS) and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO).
What can you expect?
Prepare for some serious rhythm and grooves as the Leicestershire Music Service (LMS) and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) take centre stage. Witness a mashup of NYJO’s Big Band and young talents from LMS, presenting a New Orleans style march through Leicester’s heart. Their performances will light up various locations, from outside the former Debenhams in Highcross to the clock tower and St Peter’s Square between 2pm and 4pm.
Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of DJing with our Masterclass, designed to educate participants on the basics of DJing, the world of Grime music, and its rich history in the Leicester music scene. Are you more about expressing your creativity through visuals? Take part in a postcard design competition celebrating Pedestrian’s 25th-anniversary, and see your creation on display in an art gallery.
Pedestrian is the powerhouse behind the Grime Opera and is passionate about using arts and creativity to inspire, engage, and elevate young lives. This event embodies that vision – you’ll get a chance to experience music, take part in the performances, and even get a taste of classical music.
While attending the event, be sure to check out the Grime Opera Wall painting on the High Street next to Moss Bros. This incredible artwork is created by local artist and long-term Pedestrian supporter, Nick Shove known as UH OH, Bristol-born, Leicester-based artist, illustrator, and designer.
So, make your way to the Highcross Shopping Centre on Saturday, July 1st, and seize the opportunity to explore Pedestrian, hone your DJing skills, design a postcard, witness stellar music performances, and get a sneak peek at Leicester’s much-anticipated Grime Opera set to take stage in November.
