Why Volunteer ?

Maryna is a Gallery Host in the Pedestrian Gallery on a weekly basis.  We asked her to share her experience so far . . .

"Being a volunteer at the Pedestrian Gallery as a Gallery Host, I often get asked:

‘Why are you volunteering?’

When I started volunteering I saw this involvement as an opportunity to improve my communication skills and get an experience in the creative environment. At that time I was planning on going into Advertising and Marketing as a career route.

However, as I have been volunteering for about three months my perception on the experience has changed. Naturally, I did improve my communication skills and the environment is as creative as always, but there is so much more to it! As the exhibitions change each week it allows me to constantly meet different artists and learn about diverse art styles. I believe that such experiences made me a more broad-minded and cultured as a person. Volunteering also turned out to be a great way of learning about what is happening in Leicester and what events to keep an eye on. It was a great bonus that I met such amazing people who work at the gallery and workshops who's company is truly inspirational and enjoyable.

Being surrounded by an artistic people and atmosphere, I understood the saying: ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life'. Not only has volunteering inspired me to start doing art again, but I am currently trying myself as a freelance makeup artist. Working here encouraged me to try doing what I enjoy regardless of any fears and doubts. I know that this experience will continue to be so  rewarding and therefore I will continue volunteering here."
